Illuminated Manuscripts, Miniatures, and Early Printed Books For Sale | Dr. Jörn Günther

There seems to be a problem serving the request at this time. Many collectors relive history by assembling a collection of antique manuscripts. To qualify as an antique, the item needs to be at least years old while anything younger qualifies as a vintage or collectible piece. Interest in history, religion, or the written word from past generations is fun to enrich through handwritten diaries, letters by famous people, hemispherical world maps, or religious texts. Look for drawings, prints, and etchings or scientific journals documenting a historical event. You'll find historical antique manuscripts available beginning from the 9th through the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Long ago, in a more genteel age, the famous Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran wrote in his moving poem "Sand and Foam" that "We live only to discover beauty. All else is a form of waiting. It is also an adage that underscores what makes art so special. Art is concentrated beauty given tangible form. And nowhere is this striving for unearthly beauty more obvious then when looking at the sumptuous designs and rich colors of medieval European illuminated manuscripts.

Title and land deeds survive in abundance. They are often large sheets of particularly sturdy parchment that have escaped the ravages of time that destroy a lot of other early paper counterparts and ephemera. I am often offered vellum deeds or asked how much they are worth. Still, any old deed should be properly evaluated as some can fetch substantial sums. This recently purchased New York deed is not in the high value category of Indian deeds, but it is of scholarly interest. Wait, but Pearl Street does not touch the water?

The medieval Book of Hours evolved out of the monastic cycle of prayer which divided the day into eight segments, or "hours". By the early fifteenth century, the format of the Book of Hours had developed to satisfy the demands of private, as opposed to communal, devotion. These portable books are smaller in format than their monastic forebears, designed for use by individuals, with a liturgical system somewhat less complicated than monastic liturgy and more "user-friendly. The seven Penitential Psalms are usually included as well, and additional prayers devoted to particular saints or personal issues according to the desires and needs of the owner. In Books of Hours are preserved some of the finest works of medieval art. Each section of the manuscript traditionally begins with an illuminated miniature that complements the prayers, to stimulate contemplation and meditation in the reader. Because they were expensive and spectacular works of art, the ownership of these manuscripts was limited mainly to royalty, nobility and the very wealthy.

Interested in having your own piece of the Middle Ages? Here is a guide to buying medieval manuscripts. While one might believe that all the books created during the Middle Ages are locked up in archives and libraries, there is actually a large amount of medieval manuscripts for sale. The cost of a medieval manuscript will depend on a few factors — how old is it, its physical condition, how much is known about who made it and where, and the amount and quality of its illustrations. Manuscripts that are illuminated will likely be valued several times higher than a similar manuscript that is entirely text. The content of the medieval manuscript can also be important — many surviving works are Books of Hours, but you can also find psalters, chronicles, notarial records or many other kinds of documents. While forgery and fraud can be a problem in the general art world, Sandra Hindman, founder of the the Paris-based Les Enluminures, explains to Medievalists.
