Just because you're vegan, it doesn't mean your dog should be | The Independent

This week is National Vegetarian Week , the annual celebration of all things vegetarian. Taking the veggie option has never been easier for people, but what about vegetarian pets? Jonathan Safran Foer's recent polemic Eating Animals makes much of the contrast between our love for our pets and our complacency at the horrors of the factory farm and the abattoir. That contradiction is no more keenly felt than by the vegetarian dog or cat owner, supporting the meat industry they abhor every time they stock up on pet food. Of course, I should say the vegetarian owner of a cat or dog. Even my preternaturally clever Border collie, Charlie — a dog perfectly capable of expressing disdain — doesn't have the intelligence to base his culinary choices on a critique of the industrialised system of meat production. Despite being highly successful hunters, the diet of grey wolves varies significantly both with environment and the time of year. Studies of wolves in Yellowstone Park, US, have found that during the summer their diets contain small rodents, birds and invertebrates as well as larger prey like elk and mule deer.

Many people are surprised to learn that not only can dogs enjoy vibrant health on a vegan diet, but just like people , their physical condition can actually improve as a result of eliminating animal foods. By genus, dogs are classified as carnivorous, but metabolically, they are actually omnivorous.

There are several companies and websites that promote vegetarian no meat or fish or even vegan no animal products at all diets for cats. These products appeal to people who have chosen a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle for ethical reasons, and want to apply the same principles to their cats. As a feline veterinarian, I absolutely do not recommend trying to turn your cat into a vegetarian or vegan, but if you are determined to do so, here is my best guidance for you. There is also an Italian-made food, Ami-Cat, that our European friends are using. Wysong Vegan clearly states that it is a supplement to be used with meat either fresh or canned. It is not complete by itself.
