Also released under the title Hit the Open Man, it features the screen debut of Laurence Fishburne, who was barely a teenager at the time. Ronald Fair Leonard Lamensdorf. Review by Sally Jane Black. The tears of a mother at the sight of her dead son are filmed in grit and haze, in warm tones and city street grey, signalling clearly that this is a product of its era, 40 years old, but the statement has been made repeatedly since in a way that makes the moment not merely current but Nothing has changed, nothing probably has ever changed, except that the narrative is somehow smarter on both sides.
The film focuses on three African-American youths living in an urban neighborhood. Nathaniel Hamilton Jamaal Wilkes , credited as Keith Wilkes is a star basketball player from the neighborhood, who also goes by the nickname of "Cornbread. The plot thickens after a pick-up basketball game ends because of a heavy rain, and all the kids run to the local store and hang out, waiting for the rain to end. All the kids leave, except for Cornbread, Earl and Wilford. Earl and Wilford get into a playful argument about how fast Cornbread can run home. Unknown to all of them, an assault suspect is in the neighborhood, and is dressed like Cornbread. The two police officers are hot on the suspect's trail, but lose him in the rain.
