Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box

This is a great book for challenging and changing your mindset. It might not suit those of you who are avid absorbers of tips on how to be more skilful, more focused, or more fulfilled. This is a book for deep reflection. An opportunity to challenge your belief system, to view things differently, to re-evaluate your attitudes towards other people and stop seeing them as objects. Take your time. Allow your reflections to surface and play out. And if someone else needs you, then go to them.

Bruce L. Some leaders are right. They are always right. And when they are not right, see the first two statements and apply them accordingly. This is the path towards destruction for any company — when leaders lull themselves into believing that they are invincible and incapable of making mistakes. In this book, you will find painful examples of what happens when such a business culture is allowed to grow.

Written as a parable, this book explores how we all view and treat others as objects to help us accomplish our goals termed being " in the box " as opposed to viewing others as people, with their own hopes and dreams being " out of the box ". Being " in the box " limits our ability to reach our full potential and betrays the basic obligation that we each have to see others as they are, as people. We see people who challenge these images as threats and those who reinforce these images as allies. But regardless, we view others merely as objects, not as people.

Since its original publication in , Leadership and Self-Deception has become a word-of-mouth phenomenon. This book shows how the problems that typically prevent superior performance in organizations and cause conflicts in our personal lives are the result of a little-known problem called self-deception. When trapped in self-deception, we live and work as if trapped in a box. But there is a way out. Through an entertaining and engaging story, Leadership and Self-Deception shows what self-deception is, how it infects our lives, the damage it does, and, most importantly, what can be done about it. This third edition includes new research about the impact of self-deception in organizations and the keys to eliminating its devastating effects. The reflection and discussion questions in this guide can be used to enrich individual and group study of Leadership and Self-Deception.
